Butch Robertson began his race-directing career with a small race in Greenville, NC, in October 1979. After directing numerous small events, Robertson founded and directed the first Old Reliable Run in 1984 with over 2000 runners and has directed the event for all 27 years. Robertson founded and directed the Triangle Triathlon and directed it for 10 years.
In addition to having managed over 500 road races, including over 40 with over 2000 runners, Robertson brings a varied background to event management. Among the events directed are the Men’s National 10K Championship, events for the US Olympic Committee, several State Championship events, the Special Olympics World Games Marathon and Half Marathon, NHL All Star 5K, Hendrick Motorsports and the North Carolina Half Marathon Series.
Robertson was on the founding committee for the Walk for Hope and has worked on numerous fundraising walks around the region. He served on the North Carolina Amateur Sports Board of Directors, producers of the Cycle North Carolina Bicycle Ride.
When Lance Armstrong came back from cancer in 1997, Robertson directed his initial fundraising bike ride for cancer research with Lance participating in the ride.
In 1992, Robertson was inducted into the Road Runners Club of America’s Hall of Fame.
Aside from these events, Robertson has managed the International Auto Expo, Investigative Reporters and Editors National Conference, Women’s National Speakers Series, the nationally recognized Glaxo/Smith-Kline Holiday Invitational Basketball Tournament, Hot Hoops 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, the Capital City Soccer Clash, as well as several golf tournaments and festivals.
Events he has managed or directed have raised over $2,000,000 for non-profit organizations, including the highly successful Send-A-Kid-To-Camp Program for underprivileged kids and the Triangle Educational Advancement Foundation.
